Title: Grounded, The International Community's Betrayal of UNAMID

A new international report demonstrates that the Czech Republic, India, Italy, Romania and Ukraine have the helicopters Darfur's UNAMID peacekeepers desperately need. One year ago, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping deployment, but the international community has since failed to provide essential equipment and support for the mission, including 18 helicopters. Last month, 7 peacekeepers were killed and 22 injured in an attack. Canada must work with potential donor countries to get UNAMID the air support it needs to succeed.

Title: Darfuri civilians targeted following violence in Khartoum

Action Alert: Mass arrests and public beatings have taken place in and around the Sudanese capital of Khartoum following an attack by Darfur rebels on May 10th. The rebel-initiated assault and government retaliation both raise serious concerns for the prospects for peace in Darfur. Furthermore, human rights and Darfuri groups are receiving reports of the use of torture and summary public executions against unarmed civilians in the capital, and reports that certain Darfuri ethnic groups have been targeted. On August 18th, Amnesty International reported that "the Sudanese government [is still] holding hundreds of people – including women and a nine-year-old  – without charge or access to lawyers as they prepare to try another 109 in sham courts."

Save Darfur Canada (SDC) has sent a letter to all of Canada's Members of Parliament (MPs). You can make an important difference by making a phone call to your MP's office, and asking him or her to voice their concern to Prime minister Harper and within their party. Click here to read more about the recent violence and to see clear instructions of how you can take action.

The World Food Programme cuts rations by half

On Thursday, April 17th, the World Food Program (WFP) announced that food rations in Darfur will be reduced by half, due to insecurity along delivery routes. Since the beginning of 2008, 60 WFP contracted trucks have been hijacked in Darfur, with 39 trucks still missing and 26 drivers unaccounted for. One driver was killed in Darfur last month. As result, cereals will be cut from 450 grams per person per day to 225 grams and high-protein pulses (beans or lentils) will be cut to only 30 grams.

Take action. Send the Prime Minister 15 grams (four teaspoons) of rice, beans, or lentils, along with a letter.
