BECOME A MEMBER
Information for potential members of the coalition

Thank you for taking interest in becoming a member of Save Darfur Canada. The information below is intended for organizations, groups, small businesses and associations that are interested in becoming members of the coalition. Individuals are not considered "members" of the coalition, but nevertheless play a very important role in our work – if you would like to be involved as an individual, we encourage you to subscribe to our email list (through the link in the upper left-hand corner).

A Not-For-Profit Coalition
Save Darfur Canada is a national not-for-profit organization based out of Montreal, Quebec, and is the only bilingual organization mandated to undertake sustained Darfur advocacy in Canada. All of our funding goes towards Darfur advocacy work in Canada, with most coming from individual and small group donors. Click here for more information about us.

Building a Sustainable Coalition
SDC seeks to unite a broad coalition of groups across the country in Darfur advocacy, where no national coordination in this area currently exists. We aim to develop SDC into a sustainable coalition of civil society actors, and to expand the scope of our work to include issues beyond Darfur. To see a list of our member organizations, click here.

Member groups have endorsed the January 2008 Save Darfur Canada Unity Statement, which outlines the solutions that our coalition supports to end the current crisis in Darfur. Our policies promote international engagement through a UN-sanctioned framework, and solutions to lay the groundwork for long lasting peace in Darfur and the whole of Sudan. If you would like to become a member of the SDC coalition, simply look over our Unity Statement, and send an email indicating your endorsement to membership@sdcanada.org.

Membership
Members of Save Darfur Canada are organizations, groups, small businesses and other associations across the country who endorse the objectives of the coalition’s work. Relatively few members participate in SDC’s day-to-day activities, though the majority will at times participate in our campaigns, or communicate information about our work to their constituents. Individuals can sign up to receive regular SDC communications and advocacy resources, but cannot themselves become members. There are no fees or obligations to participate in SDC activities when becoming an SDC member. We encourage participation in national campaigns and activities and create special resources to help member organizations do so, but some signatories will inevitably support us in name only. Other groups and organizations play an essential role in stengthening Darfur advocacy in Canada.

The Save Darfur Canada Unity Statement
The Unity Statement outlines the ways in which the coalition asks for the Government of Canada to play a greater role in ending the current crisis in Darfur. Our policies promote international engagement through a UN-sanctioned framework, and developments which will lay the groundwork for long-lasting peace in Darfur and the whole of Sudan. We focus on where Canada can be effective in supporting these outcomes. You can find SDC’s Unity Statement here.

SDC: Our Policies
Save Darfur Canada does not advocate for types of Canadian or international involvement in Darfur that lie outside the scope of the SDC Unity Statement (which all members have endorsed). Any substantive policy shifts or new policy areas will be integrated into the Unity Statement, and members will be consulted on the changes before they come in to effect. Groups may withdraw their membership at any time.

To sign-on as a member of the coalition, please look over our Unity Statement, and send an email indicating your endorsement to membership@sdcanada.org.
